Fairtrade Fortnight (28th February – 13th March 2011) is the Fairtrade Foundation’s annual awareness raising campaign to promote the difference that Fairtrade makes to millions of people in developing countries.
Fairtrade is about being fair to the people we trade with to get our Green Baby organic baby clothes on the shelves. Here at Green Baby we work consistently to support not only local organic cotton farmers and manufacturers but also their communities through projects in South India. The ability to connect and trade fairly with local communities is extremely important to us; and we will continue to strive to carry this message throughout our collections of baby vests, babygrows, and playsuits, and our new collection Green Kids (coming soon - up to 8 years old).
As a student, I was always aware of 'green and ethical issues', and once I'd graduated, tried to justify my 'corporate' design career, by being the one to champion the office 'green' schemes, and recycled paper and eco print processes.
Having a baby made me think beyond the veg-box delivery schemes, and bottle banks, and made me take a good look at what I was putting against my child's skin, who had picked the cotton, and cut and sewn that babygrow, and the journey that babygrow had made to my baby's nursery.
I'd found a cute little website, www.greenbaby.com and any friend or family to bring a new baby into our lives, was duly sent the classic Green Baby sleeping bag 'new baby gift'. I was spreading the word even back then!
My babies are now six and eight (how time flies!) and I've been working with Green Baby for almost three years now, having met Jill Barker, Green Baby's founder, back in 2007.
Jill set up the company 12 years ago, and Green Baby has been working ever since to raise awareness for sustainability, and the importance of supporting Organic Cotton producers, and in turn, trading fairly with every aspect of the supply chain.
Our team met with one of our colleagues from India this week. She gave some of our newer members of staff an impromptu presentation on all the amazing work out in India, and it was timely for them, during Fairtrade Fortnight, to hear that our factories meet with Social Accountability 8000 (SA8000) standards, and are Fairtrade accredited, only use non-GM-modified GOTS certified organic cotton, but beyond that, pay the factory staff a fair wage, into their own bank accounts.
We were delighted to hear that they now have organic veg plots in the factory's back gardens, which are used in the canteens, and offer a kindegarten for the children of the factory staff.
Staff are trained and well-respected. And of course, do not work with cotton which is treated or finished with chemicals.

Raising awareness about Fairtrade is important as even though one in four people say they have bought Fairtrade certified cotton products in the UK, still less than 1% of cotton fashion on the high street carries the FAIRTRADE Mark.
By buying Fairtrade cotton you guarantee cotton workers a Fairtrade minimum price as well as a Fairtrade premium for investment in social development projects such as water, education and healthcare... so this little Fairtrade label makes a big difference to millions of people’s lives!

As Barabara Crowther of the Fairtrade Foundation says:
“In today’s world, many people see labels as a way of defining themselves.
Choosing products with the FAIRTRADE Mark too says a lot about a person’s lifestyle and values”.
