Out, About and Things to Do - May Half Term

We have done a little searching for you and have pulled together some events and offers for this half term!


Out & About


Woods and Wildlife Family Trail at Chirk Castle, Chirk, near Wrexham.


Explore Chirk Castle's historic parkland with this trail for all the family. Take a tracker pack with you and discover ancient trees and rare bugs.

Dipping in the Dell Plas Newydd Hill Street, Llangollen

Children who are wild about insects will love this chance to explore as families are taken on a minibeast safari to discover what lives on the land and in the river. Wellies recommended.

Join in Queen Victoria’s 81st Birthday Celebrations at Blists Hill Victorian Town

Blists Hill Victorian Town, near Ironbridge, Shropshire will be celebrating the 81st birthday of their much-loved Queen Victoria with great style, pomp and pageantry over the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend, 28th – 30th May.  Each day will be a fitting tribute to the gracious lady with an extravaganza of colour, music and street entertainment

Date: 28th - 30th May 
Time: 10 am to 5pm. 
Admission: Blists Hill is one of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums, a Passport to all ten valid for twelve months and multiple return visits, costs £22.50 per adult, £18.25 for the 60 plus, £14.75 for students and children and £61.50 for a family of two adults and three children aged up to 18 years in full time education; under 5s free. Individual museum entry tickets are also available.

Discover the Power of Water at Enginuity, Telford, Shropshire

Discover the amazing power of water and how its energy can be harnessed at the Enginuity interactive design and technology centre, near Ironbridge during the spring half-term week.  Running from Saturday, 28th May to Sunday 5th June, Wicked Water will help unravel the mystery of how water can power machinery with demonstrations and hands-on activities for all the family.

Make your own dragon boats from simple craft materials and race them on Enginuity’s pool of doom (small extra charge to cover materials), and then watch a monster water rocket demonstration.

Admission: Enginuity is one of the Ironbridge Gorge Museums. For those on a shorter time scale, individual admission is available into any of the sites.

Spring Special at Willows Farm Village  St Albans, Herts

Young Readers Big Book Bash, Aston Hall, Birmingham 


An exciting lineup of top children's authors, poets and storytellers plus fun activities, entertainment and magic.

Events take place in marquees in the grounds and in some of the rooms inside the hall. There will be books on sale courtesy of Waterstones, plus mehndi and face painting which will carry a small charge. Young Readers is pleased each year to welcome The Federation of Children's Book Groups who provide information about their forthcoming activities and initiatives plus their ever popular quiz
