Compulsory Financial Education in Schools.

Hands up if the only financial “training” you had at school was having access to the school bank where you could bring your money in every week to save in your special blue book. Looking around now and seeing reports about the level of personal debt people have, how many people are living beyond their means and have no concept of budgeting, I wonder if the curriculum has been missing something vital all these years.

Roy and I had a discussion the other night about our first house, a small two bedroom terrace house which cost us £300 a month. We had no gas, just electricity on a key meter. We didn’t have the internet or a land line, we had mobiles (large mobiles!) and credit seemed to last forever. Our council tax was £52 a month, our electricity £30 a month and we could do a weekly shop on £40, easily.

Our bills have doubled, easily and there are many more payments going out now than we had then. Our cost of living has risen sharply; our incomes have of course increased but not as fast or as high as our expenditures have. Fortunately for us we are and always have been quite savvy when it comes to saving up etc; for young people starting out now it is much harder. Prices are high, incomes are lower and jobs are less secure. I see so many people setting up home, living on credit, above their incomes and not realising how dire things are getting until it’s too late and they are over-committed on credit.

Banks and private lenders have tightened the regulations on borrowing but not tight enough and we are now faced with school leavers and adults in a position where they simply don’t understand how to budget and live within their means, who are over-committed on credit and for whom things have spiralled out of control. The saddest thing of all? It’s avoidable!
I firmly believe that children should be taught from an early age to understand the value of money, how to create a budget and stick to it, to understand the danger of credit as well as the importance of savings. I strongly believe that this is a topic that should be built into the national curriculum and taught across the school years. Do you agree?

So far nearly 80,000 people have sign this petition, created by Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert, to state that they do believe in compulsory financial education in schools and want it in place asap. If you too agree then please take a minute to sign.

Hard times come and go, how well you survive them depends on how prepared you are when the storm hits.

How To Make a Nappy Cake

The fabulous Snaffles Mummy has put together this great slideshow on how to make a Nappy Cake!

Nappy cakes make fantastic gifts for new or expectant mums. They are ideal for gifts from co-workers, for baby showers or on the birth of the baby.

The main part of the "cake" consists of nappies and the outside is decorated with useful baby related items either in a neutral colour or one to suit the sex of the baby.

I love the fact that every part of a nappy cake is something needed and used by babies.

Here is my "How To" Guide to making a Nappy Cake.

You will need;

  • 2 bottles of toiletries either for the baby or mum
  • 69 nappies (if you want mum to be to be able to keep the cake to admire for longer then use size 2 nappies)
  • lots of elastic bands
  • safety pins
  • 2 muslin cloths
  • 1 hooded  baby towel
  • 1 soft toy
  • socks/mittens/booties/stickers to suit (optional)
  • Ribbon (optional)

You can adapt this in many different ways. You can have more or less "tiers" to the cake and experiment with different ways of decorating it.

I went to a Swishing Party last night …..

In this post, Becky at Baby Budgeting explains 'swishing' for the uninitiated!

********

I really think you should hold a Swishing Party and definitely go to one if you are invited. They are basically swap it parties. I am not suggesting you take along your partner and trade them in for a new model  or indeed swap your baby (even if they are giving you sleepless nights.) No,  these are parties where you swap your ‘stuff’. One thing those of us with little ones seem to have  is a lot of ‘stuff.’
My sister had decided on a baby and children's clothes as a them for her Swishing party. She sent out a little invite asking if we would like to go along, bringing any baby or children's clothes we no longer needed  with the opportunity to gain some we did – for no cost! She would provide coffee and cake.  Now I do like a night out, I love cake and I love something for nothing too so I was more than keen. I grabbed some kids clothes I was intending to eBay and off I went.
The whole point of a Swishing party as these swap parties are called  is to give and to gain.  We all laid out the clothes we had bought in the playroom and went off to the kitchen for a a gossip then …..we went shopping without needing a penny! We just helped ourselves to whichever clothes we wanted. Brilliant. I filled a little bag with PJ’s,  a fake lather jacket, a football top, a lime cord skirt, a colourful dress, a party dress, a white long sleeved T and various other fabulous goodies for my two children. Oh and I picked up two perfect snowsuits for my good friend who has just had a baby. Marvellous.
Any clothes left there donated to charity or taken home by the bringer.
We had a good laugh, decluttered, caught up, spent nothing, did a bit of recycling and got some beautiful clothes for our children. What a fab night out! Variations on the theme could be books, children's toys even adults clothes.

I talk about swap it parties in my book  ’How to afford time off with your baby’ and I do believe these are a really budget conscious way to add to your child wardrobe and socialise.
Have you ever been Swishing?

Review & Giveaway: Sea-Bands

Sea-Bands are designed to stop motion sickness caused by travelling and can help with morning sickness. Sea-Bands provide natural, drug-free nausea relief by applying pressure to the Nei Kuan acupressure points on each wrist by means of a small plastic stud.

I often get motion sickness on train journey’s which sounds strange but I do. So as we had a few journeys last month I thought I would give them a try.

As long as you read the instructions and follow them they are easy to put on. You just have to make sure you find the right pressure point. You have to wear both bands to ensure they work.

I really did notice a difference, normally by the end of the day I feel really nauseous and have a headache but on the trips I wore the Sea-Bands I didn’t have this.  I would use them again.

I like that they are natural which means you don’t have to use drugs and also means they are ideal for children that have motion sickness. Both the Adult and the Children’s cost £8.15 each.
You can find Sea-Bands on Facebook and Twitter.

I have two pairs of adults and two pairs of children’s to giveaway.

All you have to do is fill in the form below and tell me the 3 Different Types nausea they relieve.

Edam & Sundried Tomato Muffins

We eat cheese a lot in our house but if we're using it in cooking we tend to stick to cheddar or mozzarella. What I didn't know was that edam cheese has 25% less fat than cheddar and 14% more calcium, so great for healthy bones for children and adults.

Here's a recipe for some cheese muffins, perfect for lunchboxes and snacks.

Ingredients:
  • 275g (10oz) plain flour
  • 15ml (1tbsp) baking powder
  • 5ml (1tsp) caster sugar
  • 5ml (1tsp) salt
  • 125g (4oz) Edam wedge, grated
  • 75g (2¾oz) sundried tomatoes, chopped
  • 30ml (2tbsp) freshly snipped chives
  • 2 eggs
  • 200ml (7floz) semi- skimmed milk
  • 75g (2¾oz) butter, melted
Method
  1. Preheat the oven to 375ºF, 190ºC, gas mark 5. Line a muffin tin with 10 paper muffin cases. In a large bowl, sift together flour and baking powder.
  2. Stir the sugar, salt, three quarters of the cheese, sundried tomatoes and chives into the flour mixture and mix well.
  3. In another bowl, beat together the eggs, milk and melted butter and pour over the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined, the batter will be lumpy. Fill the muffin cases and sprinkle the tops with the reserved Edam. Bake for 20-25 minutes until risen and firm.

Delicious eaten warm or cold.

Review: Zumba Classes v Zumba DVD v Zumba Wii

A funny thing happened to me, the day I signed up to local Zumba classes I was offered Zumba DVD’s and Zumba on the Wii to review. I thought this would be a great chance to compare all three!

Zumba combines Latin and International music with a fun and effective workout system. With classes and instructors worldwide, anyone can Join the Party!

Zumba Classes

I was a little bit worried about attending a class as I hadn’t done exercise is a very long time. However there was no need to worry, the instructor was great and everyone is concentrated on the moves that you don’t have time to feel self-conscious.

The classes are an hour long, with a warm up at the beginning and a cool down at the end. We do several different dance styles such as reggae and hip hop.  The instructor goes through the moves and them you put them all together.

It’s really fast and hard work but actually lots of fun.  You have a small gap between each different dance which gives you a chance to catch your breath and have a drink.

Take plenty of water with you!

You can find classes all over the UK. Do a search here for local ones.

In the kit you get:

Zumba® Basics & 20-Minute Express
Zumba® Sculpt & Tone
Zumba® Cardio Party
Zumba® Total Body Transformation Guide

Bonus:

Two Zumba® Toning Sticks
Zumba® LIVE! & Flat Abs DVD Workouts

I really enjoyed the DVD’s they are a great mixture of cardio and toning and you can do it in the privacy of your own home.

They are easy to follow and you have the bonus of doing it in your own time, whenever you want. Ideal for busy women that can’t fit in a class.

I think it’s a great price for what you get.

The Zumba for the Will comes with a belt which acts like a motion sensor so you can see if you are doing it right, which I thought was great.

You can choose from 30 different routines and 9 different dance styles. I love that you can record your progress and plan a weekly exercise plan.

I found the instructions easy to follow and got a real buzz when I could see I was doing it right. You can choose from Beginner, Intermediate and Advance, I’m still on beginner!

You can even just learn the steps which is great when you have no co-ordination like me!

Again like the DVD you have the added bonus of being able to do it whenever you want.

The cheapest I found the game was for £21.67 on Amazon.

Conclusion

I enjoyed all three of the Zumba’s, I prefer to go to a class when I can because you really get the energy from the other people.

The DVD and Wii game are great if you want to do it at home. If I had to choose I would say the Wii game just pips it for me.

Happy Zumba!

Review & Giveaway – Humf and the Fluffy Thing on DVD

Have you ever seen Humf? No? Well you are missing out!

Humf is a purple furry thing and has great adventures with his best friends Wallace and Loon and BG loves it.

It is narrated by Caroline Quentine and is shown on Nick Jnr. Each episode is only 10 mins long just the right length for small attention spans.

We were sent a copy of the new DVD which is realised tomorrow (£9.99). It contains 10 episodes plus a bonus disc with 6 episodes.

As BG is already a big fan she loved it and I even find it amusing. My favourite thing is when the adults are taking and all you hear is “blah, blah, blah”.

It gets big thumbs up from us

I have a copy of Humf and the Fluffy Thing to giveaway.

Picture Box Review – August

This month we watched quite a few films on Picture Box. They had a great family film lounge and me and BG watched Coraline and Nanny Mcphee.  We really enjoyed them and it was nice to snuggle up and watch them.

I watched Changeling with Angelina Jolie which I have wanted to see for ages and it was really good. I am so glad I got the chance to see it.

We are on holiday this month and are staying in a caravan so are hoping to watch a few films in the evening when BG is in bed. The Movie lounge this month Music Movies which are my favourite types of movies!! I really want to see the Boat That Rocks so I will let you know how that is.

PictureBox  is a movie subscription service which is available on Samsung Internet-connected smart TVs, iPads and PCs. There is a selection of 28 movies every month and they load a new 7 every week. Have a look at the current selection.

It cost £4.99 a month which I think is a real bargain.
