The Jugit

As you all should know by now I’m trying to lower the amount of rubbish I throw away and recycling is one way to do that. Now I’m a sucker for a gadget in the kitchen, so imagine my delight when last OH bought me home not only a new gadget but a way to reduce packaging and therefore less to throw away.

I present you the Jugit .......

I can see you looking blankly at the picture, it’s a new way to buy and store your milk and it require 75% less plastic then a standard 2 pint bottle and it sits nicely in your fridge door.

With the Jugit you use bags of milk instead of bottles and a reusable jug. In pop the bag in the jug, which has a sharp spout that pierces the bag, and then you pour the milk from the top. The Jugit site can explain and show it better than me, just click here for full instructions.

The bags are made from a low density plastic that is strong and fully recyclable. Let me just put the 75% less plastic in to perspective for you, here are some statistics from the Jugit site

About 130,000 tonnes of plastic are used in milk poly bottles every year
The weight saving by moving to our bags would equal 97,500 tonne soft plastic
That's equivalent to 2.43 BILLION bottles not required
That’s the same as 3,750 full refuse trucks travelling to landfill sites!
Think of the savings in landfill requirements, for more details click here

I’m loving mine .......

There are some downsides they are only available in a 2 pint size which I know for larger families may not be practical and where in the fridge do you store the extra bags, though they can be frozen.
They are currently available in selected Sainsbury’s Stores, the Jugit costs £1.98, and the 2 pint bags cost 80p  which is 6p cheaper than a 2 pint bottle and they are on offer currently 2 for £1.50

I defiantly think this a step in the right direction and will be using mine for now on.

The Big Bedroom Clearout

A few weeks back I wrote about my Great Bathroom Clearout, well I’ve now done my bedroom! Whoop whoop!

We did BG’s room just after Christmas and took all the clothes she outgrown and toys she doesn’t play with to my niece who is 8 months younger, which is really handy. However our room really needed sorting out, actually it was my wardrobe that really needed de-cluttering.

I forgot to take pre-clearout photos but trust me it wasn’t pretty. I had far too many clothes that I never wore, and to be honest wasn’t ever going to wear again even if it did fit me. So I pulled everything out and made two piles, one to keep and one to send to the charity shop, I was really ruthless and soon the pile for the charity shop was huge and the pile to keep tiny.  It felt so good to get rid of it and became easier and easier to add to the charity pile.

I filled 5 bags for the charity shop, plus a box of books.

My wardrobe is now slim lined and I can actually see what I have, no more routing through the piles to find something to wear.
(No I don't fold very well, I don't iron either)
I promise to do this every 6 months, it feels fantastic!

I also found loads more toiletries so definitely won’t need to buy any for a while

I challenge you all to have a bedroom clearout; you’ll be surprised with what you don’t need anymore

The Great Bathroom Clear Out

Last week I promised to clear out my bathroom, as part of the Rubbish Diets challenge

Well I did it, it took about an hour and I felt good afterwards. I’m a real hoarder of things and a bargain hunter which leads to a lot of clutter as you can see below

There's more....

I took everything out of the cupboard and the basket on the side and sorted it into groups...

I found 2 Shampoos, 2 conditioners, 6 shower Gels, 3 body scrubs, 4 bubble baths, 2 bath salts, 2 gift sets, 3 tubes of toothpaste, 5 bars of soap and a lot more

In the cupboard was also empty toilet roll packets, carrier bags and some empty bottles, theses have all been recycled.

My bathroom is now clean and clutter free

I have organised the cupboard and I won’t be buying any new toiletries until they are needed!

I promise to no longer be swayed by offers and to ‘stock up’, I will buy only what is needed and where possible by unisex shower gels so me and OH can share, and share bubble bath with BG (I haven’t told them yet!).

I also promise to only buy packs that are recyclable

Next week I’m tackling my bedroom, which I fear has more lotions and potions

The Rubbish Diet

If you haven’t found the Rubbish Diet Blog then please go over and take a look, this woman is a great inspiration.

ALMOST MRS AVERAGE She has already slimmed her bin down to almost size zero and is now inspiring others to reduce their waste. She is hoping to turn the blog into a book and is busy with her manuscript: "Almost Mrs Average's Rubbish Diet: Confessions of an accidental eco-blogger".

Almost Mrs Average has started an 8 week challenge that I’m really behind on, but it’s never too late to start!

There are many reasons to slim down your bin, one is for environmental reasons, far too much is going to landfill and being wasted and also it can save you a lot of money

Last year in the New Mummy household we made a good start on recycling we bought a composter, made sure that we were recycling what we could, reused our bags and I started planning meals to make sure I only bought what food we needed. This year we need to push it up a notch and really slim our bin down and our clutter. Now I’m really bad at following challenges, but I do promise to cut down on what we use and throw away so my first step at home is my makeup and bathroom products.

I’m a bargain shopper, if something is on offer I will buy it and because of that my bathroom cupboard is full of shampoos, showers gels and toothpaste! So this week I am going to see exactly what I’ve got, what is still useable (I am known to have about 6 shower gels on the go) and what I can giveaway to friends ( I’m sure there is shampoo and condition in their for brown hair and I’ve now gone blonde). With all that I have in the cupboard and what I got for Christmas I don’t think I actually need to buy any toiletries for a long time

So operation clear the bathroom starts this week; I will tell you all how it goes next week.
